Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum described as “terrible” the discovery of three clandestine crematoriums on a property in Teuchitlán, Jalisco.

She assured the public that the case would be investigated by the state prosecutor’s office, with the possibility of the federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) stepping in.

During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum stated:

«Obviously, it is terrible. This matter falls under the jurisdiction of the security cabinet, the prosecutors, and, in due time, the courts or the judiciary to investigate.»

The Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco collective uncovered the site last week, where they found mass graves, human remains, and personal belongings such as clothing, chargers, and bullet casings.

According to activists, the property was being used as an «extermination and training camp» by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Members of the search collective shared photographic and video evidence of the site on social media.

Among the items recovered were backpacks, wallets, documents, ID cards, notebooks, and books, believed to have belonged to missing persons.

Investigation Underway

Sheinbaum emphasized that Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus has maintained contact with federal authorities to advance the investigation.

«He is in close communication with the Secretary of Security and the Attorney General’s Office. If necessary, they will take over the case, and they are currently reviewing it,» she added.

On the day of the discovery, the collective notified the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office, which dispatched forensic experts and agents to continue searching for human remains.

However, Jalisco’s Attorney General, Salvador González, claimed that the site had already been inspected in September, though at the time, no remains or evidence of interest were found.

Jalisco: The Epicenter of Mexico’s Disappearance Crisis

This latest discovery comes after authorities uncovered a camp in the same municipality in late January.

There, they rescued 38 people, 36 of whom had been held against their will by suspected CJNG members.

Jalisco remains the Mexican state with the highest number of disappearances, with over 15,000 reported cases since December 2018, according to the State Registry of Missing Persons.
